Avoiding Scams

Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

Try to deal with your local used car dealer. These dealers are licensed by the state they operate in. Ask for their state credentials and or state license number. Make a note of this information or take a picture with your smart phone. Small business dealers in most cases support local communities, sporting advents and teams. So support your local used car dealership.

  • Do not provide payment to anyone you have not met in person.
  • Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
  • Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
  • Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
  • Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
  • Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
  • Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
  • Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.
  • "Doodah voicemails" - Any message asking you to access or check "Doodah voicemails" or "Doodah voice messages" is fraudulent - no such service exists.

Recognizing scams

Most scams attempts involve one or more of the following:

  • Email or text from someone that is not local to your area.
  • Vague initial inquiry, e.g. asking about "the item." Poor grammar/spelling.
  • Western Union, Money Gram, cashier check, money order, Paypal, Zelle, shipping, escrow service, or a "guarantee."
  • Inability or refusal to meet face-to-face to complete the transaction.

Examples of Scams

1. Someone claims your transaction is guaranteed, that a buyer/seller is officially certified, OR that a third party of any kind will handle or provide protection for a payment:

  • These claims are fraudulent, as transactions are between users only.
  • The scammer will often send an official looking (but fake) email that appears to come from Doodah or another third party, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, or pretending to handle payments.

2. Distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check:

  • You receive an email or text (examples below) offering to buy your item, pay for your services in advance, or rent your apartment, sight unseen and without meeting you in person.
  • A cashier's check is offered for your sale item as a deposit for an apartment or for your services.
  • Value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item—scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service.
  • Banks will cash fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, sometimes including criminal prosecution.
  • Scams often pretend to involve a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate, etc.).

3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:

  • Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, or rent is below market, etc.
  • Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, TVs, cell phones, tickets, other high value items.
  • Scammer may (falsely) claim a confirmation code from you is needed before he can withdraw your money.
  • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, UK, Netherlands—but could be anywhere.
  • Rental may be local, but owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money abroad.
  • Scammer may pretend to be unable to speak by phone (scammers prefer to operate by text/email).

4. Distant person offers to send you a cashier's check or money order and then have you wire money:

  • This is ALWAYS a scam in our experience—the cashier's check is FAKE.
  • Sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not.
  • Scammer often asks for your name, address, etc. for printing on the fake check.
  • Deal often seems too good to be true.

5. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service:

  • Most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT and operated by scammers.
  • For more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud."

6. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which they will ship goods:

  • He says he trusts you with the partial payment.
  • He may say he has already shipped the goods.
  • Deal often sounds too good to be true.

7. Foreign company offers you a job receiving payments from customers, then wiring funds:

  • Foreign company may claim it is unable to receive payments from its customers directly.
  • You are typically offered a percentage of payments received.
  • This kind of "position" may be posted as a job, or offered to you via email.

Nevertheless, please take the same common sense precautions online as you would offline.

Helpful Hints for Private Sellers

How to sell your car on Doodah - Posting hints for private sellers.

• As a private seller, you can post up to THREE vehicles per account at any given time for free, at no cost.

• Determine the vehicles worth.

• Get the vehicle ready, a clean vehicle will be more attractive to potential buyers

• Once the car is clean and detailed, you’ll want to take plenty of pictures.

• When adding pictures, please note that there is a photo size limitation of 3 MB. Only JPEG and JPG images are accepted. The first picture that you upload, is called the leader picture. We recommend selecting a picture that shows a good representation of your vehicle.

• To sell your car in the fastest way and to get the most money, you’ll want to make sure you add as much information as possible by using the following key points, (this often also reduces the number of questions a potential buyer may have).

o Explain why you are selling the car in the “Seller’s Comments”

o Define the forms of payment you are willing to accept

o Disclose what vehicle paperwork or maintenance records you have

o Disclose any issues which need to be fixed

o List the car’s key and unique features

o Mention any added or custom modifications

• If you are aware of damage or the vehicle has a salvaged title. It’s best to disclose this information.

• Gather the paperwork, if you wait to do this step toward the end of the process, you will find yourself scrambling for all the necessary documents. You’ll need to review the required documentation and process to transfer ownership of a car as outlined by your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

• Second, if you don’t own the car outright and there is still a lien on the car, you’ll need to contact the lienholder (usually a bank) to find out how much you still owe on the car and then find out the steps involved in transferring the title. If you have the title in hand, you can sell the car and transfer the title to the new owner. You can sell a car without a title you just need to contact your state’s DMV and get a replacement title prior to selling the vehicle. Lastly, make sure the payment for the car has been secured and then sign over the title and other documentation to complete the sale.

Your personal safety is very important to us, please read the below tips.

Doodah.com will never contact you for any sensitive information. Doodah.com is NOT involved in any transactions, and we DO NOT handle payments, third party payments, transactions, of offer any type of “buyer protection” or “seller certification”.

Avoiding Scams:

• Deal locally, face-to-face

• Do not provide payment to anyone you have not met in person.

• Beware of offers involving shipping vehicles

• Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union)

• Don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money orders. Banks will cash fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, sometimes including criminal prosecution.

• Transactions are between buyers/sellers only. We don’t recommend a third party, as there is no guarantee

• Never give out your financial information (bank account, social security, PayPal account, etc.)

• Refuse credit checks until you have gone to the dealership, and you are ready to purchase the vehicle. There is no reason a private seller should ask you for a credit check.

These are the most common scams fraudsters may try to use:

• Fake, forged or counterfeit cashier’s check, certified check, money order or wire

• Offers to pay by personal check

• Offering to buy the car sight-unseen

• The fake shipping scam: A potential buyer who insist on shipping a seller’s car internationally or across the country

• Distant buyers either overseas or on a “business trip”

• Offers to pay “asap” via Pay Pal, gift card, Cash.Me, Venmo or other online payment service

• Overpayment scam, which may sometimes include a third-party website or entity

• Payment plan

• Anyone who asks you to purchase a service (such as a VIN history report)
